Austrian landscape painter Adolf Kaufmann started out as a self-taught artist. For his great talent he was already widely collected and appreciated in his time and became the founder of a painting school for women in Vienna. The present landscape with birch trees and a shepherd boy hiding in their shade is one of his masterpieces, which capture the moods and changes of the natural landscape.
