The Man in the Black Hat is one of Janeček's starting points for shape reduction influenced by abstraction and cubism. Ota Janeček was a full-time artist, his work was based on the domestic tradition and the legacy of European modernism. From the initial impulses of cubism, lyrical figuralism or French colourism, he turned his attention to his own unmistakable expression. Works by Ota Janeček can be found in the National Gallery in Prague, the Tate Gallery in London, the National Library in Paris, the MC Nay Institute in San Antonio, USA, the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts in Japan and the National Gallery of Wales.
