Helena Johnová belonged to the distinctive generation of modernist artists of the First Republic and her work with its distinctive artistic expression belongs to the key stage of Czech ceramic art. She began her artistic career by studying in Vienna in the studio of Michael Powolny at the Kunstgewerbeschule there, was one of the founding members of the Prague Artel and through her own teaching activities at the School of Applied Arts in Prague she contributed significantly to the professionalisation of ceramic art in the Czech Republic. Today, the largest collections of her works are owned by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the Moravian Gallery in Brno, but they rarely appear on the market. She contributed in no small measure to the emancipation of women artists in Czechoslovak society.
