Balthazar Martinot (1636 - 1714) (Imitator) A LOUIS XIV STYLE TABLE CLOCK

The monumental table clock is modeled after the famous French clockmaker Balthazar Martinot (1636-1714), who was considered the most famous clockmaker in Europe in his time. Clockmakers returned to the models first designed for Martinot by André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) in the mid-19th century during the reign of Napoleon III. This is an exceptionally well-crafted clock using the boulle technique, with grotesque figural ornaments on the sides, and painted brass. The box is lavishly fitted with elaborately chased brass ornaments topped with a figure of a trumpet-headed angel. The same clock is in the furnishings of the Hôtel de Ville de Strasbourg. The brass dial with inset enamel has Roman and Arabic numerals, with a portrait of the King of France in the centre. Completely restored, excellent condition, a clockwork machine for restoration.
