Wenzel Hablik's early paintings, such as the portrait offered here, are marked by their dynamic, impasto execution and expression. Later his work is dominated by symbolist inspiration and imagination. Wenzel Hablik was born to a German family from Most (Brüx). The apprenticed carpenter later turned his attention to printmaking, painting, textile design, small decorative objects, and design. He spent most of his life in Itzehoe, northern Germany, which is now home to his museum. He was nearly forgotten in Bohemia, but interest in his work has significantly increased since the mid-1990s and today Hablik is considered one of the most important artists of Bohemian-German heritage.
