Jan Kupecký was a Czech Baroque painter, an important portraitist of the nobility and artists. He worked in Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and Germany. His work stands out for its timelessness - especially the portraits of more ordinary people, which are not bound by the conservative approach to aristocratic portraits, are unusually lively, capturing small tremors of facial expressions and human thoughts. It is the expression of these portraits combined with the best he learned from Dutch painting that makes his portraits original works.
