Josef Douba was one of the genre painters, he traveled extensively, but he was most famous for paintings from the Czech environment. He recorded the seen reality with the accuracy of a painter's reporter and without striving for unnecessary effects. He often painted in the environment of Domažlice. He is the author of frescoes in the Hradec Králové library, historical paintings, and later paintings from the life of the rural people, mostly from Chodsko, and portraits. In the years 1893-1896 he participated in the exhibitions of Umělecká beseda. He contributed extensively to Golden Prague. He illustrated the edition of Babička by Božena Němcová from 1898.
