St John the Forerunner is shown in full length, with outstretched wings and a punched halo against a gold ground. The original wooden frame decorated with bold relief foliage. In the Orthodox tradition after his death, John the Baptist does not go to heaven, but to hell, where he preaches about the coming of the Messiah - Jesus Christ.
