The brightly colored Still Life with a Cut Orange by Jan Slavíček (1900–1970), son of Antonín Slavíček, comes from the collection of the important architect Jan Zázvorka. From 1916 to 1925 he studied at the Prague Academy under Jan Preisler, Vratislav Nechleba, Max Švabinský and Otakar Nejedlý. He has been on study trips in Paris, Rome, Holland and Spain. After his father's untimely death, he continued his legacy and became a respected artist. Jan Slavíček oscillated between Fauvist colors and realistic experiences. The brilliantly treated still life, left the descriptiveness and, on the contrary, brought ingenious artistic abbreviations. It brings to the relatively conservative genre an experience engraved in sensual vivid colors and in a bravure of scratched contours.
