Gustav Macoun was one of the painters whose desire to paint manifested itself from early childhood. After he completed his basic education, he studied with Alois Kalvoda and Antonín Slavíček. This painting of the early evening in countryside belongs to the turning point after graduation from these courses and his admission to the Academy of Fine Arts to V. Bukovac. He refered to Antonín Slavíček all his life and painted the landscape with a touch of impressionism. The early evening sky at dusk is indicated by basically only a few strokes, but in absolutely believable colors. In opposition to the thicker pastels of the clouds, the bright red poppies glow in the grass and both with the white yarrows are bathed in the evening sun.
