A mythological scene of Hercules in a duel with the Hydra, which terrorized Lerna. Hercules stretches for and holds a burning tree, which he uprooted nearby to burn Hydra's head where he had cut it off. Otherwise, two new ones would grow to her. By killing her, Heracles fulfilled the second of his twelve deadly tasks assigned to him by king Eurystheus. Heracles' actions belong to a practically inexhaustible genre in the fine arts.
