Patinated bronze. Bronze figure of a sitting monkey that is remarkable for its size. Detailed modeling, enchased, polychrome. Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861–1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry that produced popular bronze miniatures. He was the son of Franz Bergmann, a chaser who came to Vienna in 1860 and founded a small bronze factory. Franz Xaver inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900; initially, many of the bronzes were based on old designs. Most products were small bronze figures, cold-painted and often featuring animal and erotic motifs. He often signed his works under the pseudonym “Nam Greb”.
