Cast bronze, patinated, marble base. Marked on lower right on plinth: “ŠTURSA 1918”. Inscription on base: “SVÉMU ŘEDITELI/ K 10. ČERVNU 1930/ ÚŘEDNICTVO” (“To the Director / 10 June 1930 / Clerical staff”). This small statue is a variation of the large bronze statue that Štursa created after returning from the war in 1918. Several other versions and studies that Štursa worked on in 1917–18 exist; they were exhibited at the Exhibition of the Oeuvre of Jan Štursa at the Mánes Union of Fine Artists in 1950. Considered an example of New Classicism in modern Czech sculpture, this statue is exceptional in the context of Štursa's oeuvre for its form, which emphasizes the lyricism of the nude. Compared to his earlier work, one can observe a certain “etherealization” and lightness of the form, accenting its inner strength.
