Oil on canvas. Signed lower centre: "Vaca 66". Inscription on reverse side: "K.VACA/ ČERNÁ POINTA/ OLEJ 1966". The subject and composition of The Dark Point follows his previous Red Point, which has appeared on the auction market. This impressive painting is an example of 1960s Lyrical Abstraction, a period that is attractive for collectors and a time when Vaca was at his peak. A versatile and talented artist who was particularly known for his film poster designs, which earned him international acclaim, Vaca was one of few Czech artists who was able to bring the applied artistic function of the poster to the level of fine art. He first studied at the Rotter School of Commercial Design, and later studied in Emil Filla's studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. From 1941 he participated in group exhibitions; he held his first solo exhibition in 1948. Member of the Trasa 54 art group. Award-winning film posters: 1964 Silver at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Czech release of the Italian film "La Dolce Vita", Czechoslovak film "Obžalovaný"); 1977 Special Prize of The Hollywood Reporter (Czech release of the Yugoslav film "Byalata odiseya"); 1980 Grand Prix at the Chicago International Film Festival (Czech release of the Yugoslav film "Nacionalna klasa"); 1982 third prize by The Hollywood Reporter (Czechoslovak film "Neříkej mi majore!"); 1984 Silver Medal at the Chicago International Film Festival (Czech release of the French film "Pour cent briques t'as plus rien"); 1988 Honorable Mention for "Most Beautiful Poster of the Year" (Czechoslovak film "The Great Movie Robbery").
