The Heriz hand-knotted wool rug on cotton warp is a very nice variation of the classic design with its dominant ivory-coloured centre made from undyed mountain sheep yarn. With an always striking central geometric medallion and a flamboyant wide floral border, as well as highly stylized and geometrized natural motifs, Heriz rugs have long represented a remarkable fusion of the Persian and Caucasian repertoires. The design of these hard-wearing carpets became established in the second half of the 19th century and is rightly regarded as extremely timeless, suitable, among other things, for aristocratic dining rooms and reception halls, but also for any large and open interiors, where the subtle colour palette in the bold medallion composition is highly appropriate. A popular and very traditional interior accessory, clearly made using only vegetable dyes - this is uniquely shown, among other things, by the different shades of blue in the solitary palmettes above and below the vermilion central medallion.
