The Art Nouveau carved statue depicts a scene from the fairy tale The Devil and Kate, with the inscription "HOMO SVM" at the bottom. The Devil and Kate is a fairy tale by Božena Němcová from 1846. The story tells the tale of how a foolish devil confuses two people in the world whom he is tasked with transporting to hell. Instead of the evil princess, he brings to hell a skinny and simple-minded country woman, Kate. She makes a fuss in hell, and the devil is forced to bring Kate back into the world.
