The sensibility that Vlaho Bukovac expresses in his portraits offer a remarkably vivid testimony about the appearance of the young woman who, shrouded in a veil, is looking directly at the audience, offering a reflection of her very soul. Undulating with Impressionist brushstrokes, the veil hides her suggestively realistic portrait, giving full voice to her natural virtue. At the tender age of 11, Bukovac left home to travel extensively. He became an absolutely intrinsic part of the Croatian art scene.
The Czech market primarily features the works Bukovac created while he lived in Prague. In 1903 he was appointed as a professor at the Academy of Art in Prague, where his students included Bohumil Kubišta, Emil Filla, Václav Špála, Antonín Procházka and Josef Šíma.
