Holy favored still lifes and landscapes, subjects he repeatedly returned to throughout his life. Still Life with Glass 1930 was painted at a time when Holý was absorbing new impressions from his travels throughout France and was a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists. Influenced by the Union, he palette adopted brighter colors and his brushwork became more liberated.
In this work one can notice the gentle color transitions and white accents, which join with his expressiveness to create a harmonious whole. Holý studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Jan Preisler, Vlaho Bukavac and Jakub Obrovsky, and he also attended printmaking courses led by Max Svabinsky. He played an important role in the Ho Ho Ko Ko Social Group, which he co-founded with Karel Holan, Pravoslav Kotík and Karel Kotrba in 1924. The group primarily focused on realistic subjects and social themes. Throughout his life Holý was orientated towards expressionism, which is evident not only in his impasto landscape paintings, but also in his paintings of the urban outskirts, which are often imbued with a sense of sombreness and melancholy.
