According to the expert opinion prepared by PhDr. Rea Michalová, PhD.: “Still Life with Violin is an authentic, superb work rarely encountered by collectors by Coubine, who together with Rudolf Kremlicka is one of the most distinctive exponents of Czech modern classicism. His position is particularly special due to the fact that he lived in France from 1912 and it is there where he achieved worldwide acclaim. As part of the post-war “return to order”, he literally competed with Pablo Picasso. His large figurative composition Paysage La Haute Loire (1919) attracted attention at the Salon des Indépendants in 1919. After viewing Coubine’s solo exhibition of drawings at Bernouard bookstore, art dealer Adolphe Basler immediately signed a contract with the artist. This was followed by further exhibitions that brought his work to leading collectors and many museums and galleries around the world. Still Life with Violin is a masterful example from the peak of Coubine’s classic (revival) period in the 1920s, his best and most sought-after period when the artist achieved worldwide renown. The painting brings together crystal-clear, meticulously cultivated form with an image of the calm, quiet beauty of an intellectual corner of the home, flowing from the inner harmony of individual elements of the painting ... Coubine’s work from the early 20s, like Still Life with Violin, was praised by the most well-known theorist of the Czech interwar avant-garde, Karel Teige.”
