Cara marble. A native of Bohemia, in the early 20th century he was an important exponent of the Wiener Secession. In 1903–1906 and 1909 he was a professor at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. His principal works are primary associated with architecture, and he was involved in decorating the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. Metzner’s most important work is the interior decoration for the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. In Bohemia he mainly worked in Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Teplice and Prague. The Madonna here is from the artist’s later oeuvre, which is typified by smooth S-shapes. From the Prague-based collection of Bohuslav Dusek.
