Dutch artist Nicolaas van der Waay was a popular oil and watercolor painter and lithographer who also designed coins and banknotes. In 1891 he was appointed professor at the Academy. He is perhaps most well-known for his allegoric a illustrations on the Golden Coach, which is used in special ceremonies by the Dutch royal family. The portrait of the young woman is conspicuously similar to a detail on the right door, depicting the Dutch Version seated on the throne. She is the symbol of the Dutch commonwealth, usually portrayed with a noble facial expression, dressed in a Roman robe flowing in broad pleats down to the floor.
