An energetic vera icon painting with deep scrapes through which a blue sky seems to emerge, indicating it will engulf everything. The tired, worrisome face, reminiscent of the impression on the Shroud of Turin, disappears in places against the blood-soaked background. Respite is found in a naivist rendition on the other side of the painting: The Edict of Milan, the proclamation that established religious toleration for Christianity.
