Roland Topor was a French artist and writer influenced by surrealism and pataphysics. In his youth, he decided to become an artist. He studied at Beaux-Arts, then worked as an illustrator, first for the magazine "Bizarre" from 1958 to 1961, then for the satirical magazine "Hara-Kiri" until 1965. He continued to work as an illustrator until the end of his life.
