Piepenhagen, in the sign of the highest romanticism, composed and paraphrased views of mirrored forest lakes, distant views of mountain valleys, shots of picturesque forest thickets, rocky night landscapes. He painted landscapes exclusively from his own imagination, mostly quiet, dreamy, rarely with solitary pilgrims, and he was very fond of castles and ruins.
