When he refused to renounce his faith, it is said that he and his tutors were thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil, pitch and lead by order of the Emperor Diocletian himself, but his holiness freed him. He was then thrown to the lions, who did not eat him, but licked his feet as a sign of humility.
