ICON OF THEOKOTOS IN SILVER COVER

The traditional ‘Mother of God’ Russian icon, called the ‘Bogoroditsa’ is painted on a carefully prepared wooden panel. It shows the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus. The painting is covered by a silver and gilt cover, called a Riza. The Riza has been made to mimic the details of the painting and superimposes layers of silver metal in order to give the picture a 3-dimensional effect. The silver has cut-outs that match the faces and hands. Marks in upper corners.
