Alois Kirnig first studied privately in Prague with Ferdinand Lepié, then with Max Haushofer. Kirnig's training with Eduard Schleich in Munich significantly influenced his landscape design. He was well acquainted with Dutch and modern French landscape painters, and in his paintings he focused on the effects of light and atmospheric phenomena and the modeling of volumes by layering paint.
