Abigail was a beautiful and wise woman who was one of King David's wives. The painting, which follows the Flemish masters and especially Peter Paul Rubens, describes the moment when Abigail heard that David was coming to punish her proud and greedy husband and, unbeknownst to him, she and her servants prepared a meal and went out to meet David to try to prevent bloodshed.
