RAPE OF THE SABINE WOMEN

The two alabaster sculptures representing the mythological motif of the abduction of the Sabines are based on a three-figure model by the Italian Mannerist sculptor Giovanni da Bologna. Giambologna created the original colossal marble sculpture "The Abduction of the Sabines" in Florence's Loggia dei Lanzi between 1581 and 1583. For Giambologna, this was a group that allowed him to showcase his compositional skills, which could be viewed from virtually any angle. The alabaster sculptures on offer are in torsional form.
