Jaroslav Herbst (1887 - 1971) GIRL WITH A DOLL

The picture, painted with an expressive and naive accent, represents one of the approaches of the work of the painter-autodidact Jaroslav Herbst. The artist came from a peasant family from Dušník in Podřipsko. He studied mechanical and later civil engineering at the Prague Technical University and started painting in 1912 as a self-taught painter. After the First World War he returned permanently to his family farm, where he farmed and painted in complete isolation from the artistic environment.
