Tomáš Kučera is a designer and glass artist. He was born in Světlá nad Sázavou, which is known as the centre of glassmaking. Student of the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Prague - Rony Plesl's glass studio. He also studied product design at the Prague Scholastica and multimedia production at the SUŠG in Jihlava. His work includes a wide range of small product collections, but also free sculptures, which are mostly made of glass. Both blown and fused glass sculptures. Kučera often works with ritual principles aimed at awareness or representation of process. In 2021 he won the Czech Design Award. He was also nominated for the
Czech Grand Design, Elle Decoration Design Award, and Designblok Award 2022. His free work has been exhibited in Prague, at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan, Brussels, Lommel, Belgium, and the Boon Room Gallery in Paris. The work Ceremony consists of a black, glass pedestal on which five hatches are placed. Under the last hatch, an important object can be stored. In the object, the artist perceives ritual as the opposite of direct function. In order to grasp the object under the smallest hatch, one must go through a series of actions, which include creating a surrounding space for the deposited glass, or extreme caution due to the fragility of the touching elements of the reliquary. This is a kind of imitation of the ritual long staircase at the end of which is an important building or statue.
