Jan Benda (1897 - 1967) STILL LIFE WITH A CUP AND APPLES

Jan Benda dedicated the dominant part of his work to still lifes. During his apprenticeship, he met the painter František Tichý, during the treatment of war injuries in the Prague Invalidovna with the photographer Josef Sudek and during his painting stays in Brandýs nad Labem (since 1928) with the painter Vilém Plock. It was Sudek's photographic still life that probably influenced him to find a way to use his compositional talent in their tight-bound world, and he composed this small world in the spirit of Fauvism and Cubism and experimented extensively, especially with the form of expression.
