Josef Ženíšek was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under professor Lhota and also studied at a school in Munich. After graduating, he traveled to Paris and Rome. He became famous for his girl portraits. In Compassion, he briefly abandons his usual portrait format and paints a girl with a rabbit with piercing black eyes sitting on a fence. The work was exhibited at the National Jubilee Exhibition in Prague and published in the magazine Zlatá Praha.
