This portrait convincingly depicts both elements of Bulgarian folklore and the face of a young girl with dark eyes. Jan Václav Mrkvička was a Czech painter who actively contributed to artistic life in Bulgaria. He is considered one of the founders of Bulgarian modern painting, founded the local art academy and is called a national classic, although he was Czech. He also worked as a publicist and poet. He used the name Ivan in Bulgaria.
