Oil on canvas.
Signed lower left: “Preisler”.
This unique, intimate work – a landscape detail with a view of a meander in a stream with a distant, empty, monolithic landscape – creates a highly gripping effect, bestowing the painting with a pleasant, contemplative atmosphere. Jan Preisler is one of the founders of Czech modern art, and he and Antonín Slavíček are the main exponents of the 1890s generation of painters. He is one of few painters to have been included in summaries of European art history. His work builds on the lyricism of Josef Mánes and of his teacher, František Ženíšek, from whom he gained perfect mastery of technique, precise drawing and composition. Preisler did not devote all of his energies to classic oil painting; he also worked on decorative architecture and book designs and illustrations.
