Fused polished glass. Signed bottom right: "OLDŘICH PLÍVA". After attending the Secondary Glass School in Železný Brod, Oldřich Plíva continued his studies under Professor Libenský at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He and his contemporaries, Aleš Vašíček, Yan Zoritchak and Marian Karel, are exponents of new cut "prismatic" sculptures. The artists aim to use the optical qualities of cut, often crystal glass, building on the work of Stanislav Libenský and especially Václav Cigler. In his sculptures, Oldřich Plíva mainly focuses on resolving the inner space in relation to its outer whole. He thus deconstructs basic geometric forms, which he then reassembles into their original shape or focuses on the relationships between these basic forms.
