Carrara marble. Signed on reverse: F. Papucci. This excellent execution of a scene depicted since antiquity, Venus crouched and kneeling or Aphrodite bathing, captures Venus surprised during her bath, kneeling on her right knee, her head half-turned over her right shoulder. Discovered in Roman archeological digs, these ancient sculptures were placed in prominent private collections (Medicci, Borghese, Gonzaga, Vatican, Louvre, etc.) and went on to inspire modern artists to copy them. The statue is mounted on a special base with a rotating mechanism. Height: 89 cm, with base 187 cm.
