The biblical theme of Christ dragging the cross through the streets of Jerusalem and Veronica wiping his face, which miraculously imprints itself on the fabric and creates the so-called Veraikon - a true image not painted by human hand, is one of the essential themes of Christian art. The theme reflects the perception of the body in the Christian cult and the way some holy relics are created. The present work corresponds to an Italian, probably Florentine provenance; a similar type of face has already appeared on the market in the form of St. Catherine.
