Josef Mařatka studied at UMPRUM under Prof. Celda Klouček (1889-1892), from where he moved to the studio in 1896. J. V. Myslbek at the Academy of Fine Arts. Mařatka's chamber sculptures, which include the offered study of a hand, were based on the impressionistic method of modelling acquired during his stay in Paris in the studio of Auguste Rodin. Among his most important works created in Rodin's studio is The Abandoned Ariadne (1903). An analogous study of a hand is in the collections of the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín under the inventory number P-35.
