Charles André van Loo (1705 - 1765) (attributed) PORTRAIT OF A LADY

Charles André van Loo was responsible for building the cultivated expression of the French school of painting. He thoroughly studied Italian masters and created elaborate works full of interesting details, richly pleated fabrics and devoted himself to court portraiture. He settled in Paris in 1734 and a year later became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, where his fame soon began to grow. Madame de Pompadour, together with the French court, became one of its patrons. In 1762 he was appointed the First painter of King Louis XV.
