Jan Baptista Dvořák (1825 - 1890) A VIOLA

From the expert assessment by Tomáš Pilař: “The presented viola has an original label adhered to the inside: ‘J.B.DWOŘÁK / Fecit Pragae 1879.’ The instrument is an original by the master violinmaker Jan Baptista Dvořák with all original parts, including the original mahogany varnish, which was applied to the entire instrument and has remained intact. The viola is constructed according to an original model reminiscent of the Guarneri with narrower chamfers. On the back he used tiger maple with medium flame, while the ribs are almost completely smooth. Under the varnish, the wood is stained a relatively dark stain. The condition of the instrument is very good, with no cracks in the soundpost or plates.”
