Oil on wood panel. Signed lower left: “P. Kotík 31”. A respected painter currently very popular among collectors, Pravoslav Kotík studied under Professors Mašek, Dítě and Schikaneder at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. He was a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists and the Ho Ho Ko Ko Social Group (with Karel Holan, Miloslav Holý and sculptor Karel Kotrba), and exhibited with Umělecká Beseda. In the 1950s he lived in isolation and was prohibited from exhibiting his work until 1958. Initially his work was influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism. In the 1920s he inclined towards geometric Cubism, which he primarily expressed through the reduction and simplification of structures; later he also found inspiration in Neoclassicism. Kotík's lifelong theme was man within a complex social structure. Restored.
