Fused molded glass. Diameter 23 cm, h: 36 cm, weight: 27 kg. Signed below: "Alena Matějka". Czech sculptor Alena Matějka studied at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague under Professor Vladimír Kopecký and at Glasgow School of Art. She returned to the United Kingdom in 2003–2005. During a five-month British Council scholarship, she worked at the National Glass Centre at Sunderland University and made the largest glass sculptures that had ever been made in the UK. In 2009 she led a course at Pilchuck Glass School in the United States titled "The Aesthetics of Patterns". Alena Matějka's oeuvre is diverse. For small and large installations she uses glass, marble, stone, and has combined glass with taxidermied animals or ice. She gets inspiration from myths, old stories and antique ornaments, connecting them with her dreams. Her works are represented in leading Czech and international institutions and collections, and are shown at solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Norway, Japan, the Netherlands, Slovakia and the United States. She has received national and international awards for her work.
