Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: "OMRKVIČKA.41". In the period from the 1930s, the principal characteristic feature of Mrkvička's paintings stemming from his personal philosophy was Social Civilism. He himself was an exponent of the Czechoslovak avant-garde, integrating caricatures evocative of František Gross and socially-motivated Prague neighborhoods into his paintings. Mrkvička's classmates at the School for Applied Arts in Prague included Toyen, Alén Diviš and Ladislav Sutnar, all of whom figured in the inception of the legendary art group Devětsil. Together with Karel Teige they held educational talks and focused on modern typography, and today they are rightly considered the founders of modern Czech typography.
