Two books in one volume, first edition. Folio. Damaged 18th century binding; two gilt labels on the spine. A monumental 17th century encyclopedia of aristocratic entertainment for gentlemen. The arts, sciences, mathematics, heraldry, and especially riding, hunting, fishing, farming, falconry and other disciplines are represented here alongside text descriptions and an artistically valuable illustrated section containing nearly one hundred copperplate engravings by the superb English painter, printmaker and illustrator Francis Barlow (1626–1704), the father of British sporting painting, whose scenes were transferred to etchings by numerous artists, including his contemporary, Wenceslaus Hollar.
