Tempera on paper. Signed lower right: “KYBAL, 1952”. Stamp; from the estate of the artist's heirs. Two rug designs on an A4 sheet. The first is a black, white and red rug from a series of designs published in the book Lucie Vlčková, Antonín Kybal, North Bohemian Gallery of Fine Art in Litoměřice, p. 56. The second, a brownish-grey rug, is connected with designs from the 1950s. Antonín Kybal was a leading figure in Czech home textile design and an innovator in 20th century textiles, whose designs and work as a teacher helped to elevate textile design from a conservative and dwindling traditional craft to a distinctive means of artistic expression corresponding to the language of Modernism. Kybal's main contribution was his ability to place high demands on aesthetics, craftsmanship and materials in industrial production and interweave them with society's contemporary needs.
