Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: HLINOMAZ 72".
The witty, borderline provocative painting “Disperse!!!” is one of the best examples of Josef Hlinomaz's (1914–1978) work from the late 1960s/early 1970s, an exceptional period that is highly valued among collectors. The important Czech Naïve artist, actor, reporter and illustrator uses humorous hyperbole in this painting featuring his characteristic naïve charm. The visual space is built using various perspective views, with figures with many different stories and elements of the absurd spread out across the space. The observer is drawn into the labyrinthine fantasy world and is forced to focus on and inspect every detail.
Although the artist was primarily known as a comedy actor, he was versatile and was able to work with both artistic forms –acting and painting – at the same time. His paintings were especially influenced by Henri Rousseau; Hlinomaz himself called the style of his paintings “Surneonaïvism”
