UP Závody, Brno. Seats: plywood, oak veneer; armrests and backrest: solid oak; chrome. The chair is published in the book Jindřich Chatrný et al, Jindřich Halabala a Spojené uměleckoprůmyslové závody v Brně (Jindřich Halabala and UP, the Associated Arts and Crafts Enterprises in Brno), Brno−Olomouc 2003, p. 106. Jindřich Halabala studied architecture under Pavel Janák at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. His primary focus was furniture; in 1931 he created a suite of armchairs for UP that featured bent wooden sideboards, with five different seats and back and armrests mounted to them. His armchairs were a huge hit in the 1930s. His idea to create furniture sets that could be assembled in various ways, allowing people to arrange furniture based on their own wishes and needs, represented a fundamental contribution to furniture design.
