The work is part of a series of the four seasons, which was created when Bukovac was in his sixth year as a teacher at the Academy in Prague. Each canvas depicts scenes from country life. Spring is expressed in a fresh romantic scene of a young girl standing in a blooming orchard reaching to smell a flowering lilac. The figure exhibits portrait-like characteristics and detailed attention is focused on the initial intent, while the landscape is almost suggested. The painting is a part of the artist's mature creative period, which is characterized in part by genre scenes with half-figures. The brushwork and work with color and light atmosphere corresponds with Bukovac's Impressionist vision. The painting is listed in the catalogue raisonné under the title "Proljeće" and number 836 as part of the monograph by Vera Kružyć-Uchytil: Vlaho Bukovac – Život i djelo, Zagreb, 2005. Published in the magazine Český svět, 1909. Oil on canvas, signed and dated "Vlaho Bukovac 1909" on bottom right.
