The artist, a Bohemian German, studied ceramics in Teplice and later attended the Academy of Arts in Prague under Josef Myslbek. Well-known works include his portrait sculptures of the abbots of the Premonstratensian monastery in Teplá. The sculpture of the seated monk meditating over an open book is characterized by a sophisticated approach to the sculpture's mass and by a certain reduction in form. It nevertheless reflects a profound concentration, underscored by the hand resting against the chin. Bronze.
